Live Streaming and Gyms

Updated: Feb 16

At-home fitness is not something that became a trend because of the recent pandemic, it has been around since the early 1950s. Originally, the option was fitness magazines or broadcast media. We have long since evolved to more advanced and convenient mediums. One popular source of at-home fitness before COVID was small online influencers, but that was not as popular as gym memberships.

During the pandemic, these micro-influencers found new successes and many new followers, while at the same time gyms were faced with an entirely new problem. Many that were stuck at home sought out something to replace their gym needs, others were just starting to add it to their routine. Gyms needed to find new ways to stay afloat since their business relies heavily on those consumers continuing their memberships.

What are Gyms doing?

Gyms have begun having their instructors live streaming what they are doing and creating videos that people could watch to get their workouts. This has created a whole new way of working out from home. Bigger gyms were able to integrate it onto their apps and other gyms began using Zoom or other services. This gives gyms the ability to provide more engagement and real-time support to make sure everyone gets the help they need for a satisfying workout.

This niche part of the industry is continuing to grow, and due to the potential of new variants, there is a possibility for another lockdown. Many people still don’t feel comfortable with going back to full in-person workouts. At least 75% of people surveyed by Bloomberg said that “they will eventually return to pre-pandemic routines and the actual gym, many indicated they will retain a virtual component.”

The industry itself is expecting to reach $27.4 billion by 2022. It has been expected to have had a compound annual growth rate of 32.6% from 2017 – 2022. Meaning that starting to live stream, even now, would be beneficial.

One of the biggest growths within the industry is yoga. Yoga is trending in at-home workouts because of the peace and mindfulness that yoga can provide. Half of the virtual platform bookings are for yoga classes. Mental well-being is a top priority alongside physical well-being.

This market is expected to continue its growth, just like virtual exercise classes. The combination of physical and mental benefits provides members a value that might even surpass in-person yoga classes, considering the convenience of skipping traffic.

Another big trend in the industry is internet-connected bikes. These are at-home workout platforms with a screen that has capabilities to view workout streams and track progress. These are typically expensive, such as the offerings from Peloton.

Many people argue that there is a gap in the market for people who would rather utilize their existing equipment, or at least not be locked down to one specialized device. Gyms and studios could very much benefit from offering videos and live streams tailored to this market if they are not doing so already.

Live Streaming Platforms

It has never been a better time than now for gyms to take advantage of the subscription-based membership model, but in order for their members to continue getting value from their memberships, it is important that they are provided with the convenience and consistency that they expect.
